Volunteer

Volunteer with the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy

The Pound Ridge Land Conservancy relies on dedicated volunteers to fulfill its mission. At our protected preserves, both with and without trails, or at the Armstrong Education Center and its educational outdoor venues, we will work with you to design a rewarding volunteer opportunity that fits your work or school schedule and meets your individual interests and timeframe. Volunteer opportunities can be structured during the weekday or weekend for as many or as few hours as you’d like to give.  Please download our Volunteer Application Form and use it to tell us more about yourself.

Are you organizing a group of volunteers? Is your company or group looking for a volunteer opportunity? We can facilitate groups of most any size and would love to help your group accomplish an appropriately sized task.

Please direct all volunteer inquires and interests to Krista Munger: landsteward.educator@prlc.net

Current volunteer opportunities

Scheduled volunteer work sessions

The first Saturday of each month during the year, volunteers come together to accomplish a specific task on a PRLC preserve. Supervised by PRLC staff or board members, these work sessions usually involve physical, out-of-doors work and an opportunity to learn-by-doing. Past work sessions have included stonewall rebuilding at the Armstrong House, planning and constructing the infrastructure for the Armstrong gardens, spring and fall clean-up, seasonal planting planning and actual planting, weeding and watering, invasive plant removal and control, native plant propagation, trail maintenance, and bridge, stair and kiosk installation and replacement. Check our events calendar to find out information about the next volunteer, in-the-field work session.

Small building projects

We currently seek skilled craftspeople to assist with small building projects such as wooden walkways, benches and kiosks. Once constructed and in place, these structures will enhance the educational and hiking experience of our preserves’ visitors. Please contact Krista for more information about specific building projects.

The Trail Steward Program

Trail Stewards regularly walk their designated trail(s) and address manageable issues that arise on the trail such as downed branches, missing trail markers and the occasional piece of garbage. We rely on trail stewards to be the eyes and ears of our preserve to ensure a safe and successful hike for our visitors.

The Native Plant Protector Program

Invasive plant species are well established on most of our preserves and are a threat to local biodiversity. To supplement the ongoing effort by PRLC staff and board members, we look to our dedicated Native Plant Protectors to clear their assigned area(s) of invasive plants. By working within a flexible schedule, our Native Plant Protectors spend a good deal of time in the field making a real ecological difference.

Eagle Scout Leadership Projects

We partner with Eagle Scout candidates who are in need of fulfilling an Eagle Scout Leadership Project to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout Leadership Projects provide a mature scout with an opportunity to lead his peers while producing a valuable resource to the community.
